An Interview With A Dolphin Trainer (SCAMPER)

Tommy Lai has one of the best jobs in the world---or at least he thinks so! He's a dolphin trainer at Ocean Park. Find out more about Tommy and his fascinating job in the interview below.

I (I = Interviewer): How did you become a dolphin trainer?
T(T= Tommy Lai): I saw an advertisement which is in South China Morning Post, x th May, 2003, Page C4. I thought it sounded like an unusual job so I applied. That was nearly five years ago.

I: What qualifications do you need to become a dolphin trainer?
T: (eliminate something) In the past, most of the trainers studied overseas. However, these days there are more graduates from local universities. I myself studied at the Chinese University. Also I think I am too handsome so I need to become a dolphin trainer for people to see me easily.

I: What does a dolphin trainer actually do?
T: Well, one obvious answer is train dolphins. However, we spend less time doing this than people think. Our main responsibility is to look after the dolphins--to make sure that they are happy and healthy. For example, the first thing I do every morning is to check their temperature and see that they are well enough. I also spend a lot of time feeding the dolphins, playing with them and cleaning the tanks. Dolphins are too playful. Also they are beautiful. This is a picture of me stroking and playing with my favorite dolphin, Carrie (substitute Toto). Carrie is very beautiful but it is different from others because it has legs. It can even walk and run (modify the dolphins that can just swim) in the ground like human.

I: How do you train a dolphin?
T: One of first tricks we teach the dolphins is to touch a stick with their mouth. That is the training stick over there. It's about half a metre long. You can see one in this photo too. They also learn other simple tricks such as shaking hands, touching the trainer's hands, singing and dancing. It takes time to learn tricks so the younger dolphins generally know fewer tricks than the older ones. One thing that is interesting. Although Dolphin Carrie is young, it has already knew all the tricks. That makes me surprised.

I: Would you recommend this job to other people
T: Yes, definitely. It's hard work but very rewarding.

Fuk Lam Church

My class went to Fuk Lam Church in the afternoon of 25th April. The Fuk Lam Church is located at 47-57, Temple Street.

We went there after we had done eating in Tao Heung Restaurant. The Fuk Lam Church is on the 1st floor. We walked upstairs but the stairs were dirty, narrow and dark. First, we watched a video about Yau Ma Tei. Then, we seperated into groups and talked about Yau Ma Tei. Finally, we sang songs about the Jesus. And we walked down the dirty, narrow, dark stairs to the ground floor.

I was so surprised that Mr. Lai (who established the church) can place a church in Temple Street, even the place is dirty and the people are bad. After this church trip, I learnt that if we get problems, we can pray to ask Jesus for help and he will help us to solve the problems.

Typhoon "Wu hong"

Last week, a typhoon called "Wu hong" came to Guangtong and brought us strong wind and heavy rain. On 17/4, Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) held the typhoon signal no.1 and on 18/4, held the typhoon signal no.3 . On 19/4, there was strong wind and heavy rain. In the evening, there was heavy rain about 70mm per hour. HKO held the yellow , red , black rain signals respectively. There were over 150mm of rain at that day. A few hours later, the typhoon was disappeared.

VOA News Article Contest

I am Francesco Tse from Hong Kong. After reading this article, I knew more that the student in America can get paid as a reward after they do something. I think money is not good as a reward because they won’t do anything when they can’t be paid. For me, I want some extra marks or merits as a reward is a most powerful for me to doing well or giving service at school. But if it must be paid, I will clean for school classrooms. I think this ‘America style’ won’t work in Hong Kong for students.

Ten years ago, in a city, Dr. Money and Mrs. Money were married. Dr.Money needed to go to work. He met Dr. Kill in the office. Both of them were rich. Both of them had $800,000 at the first respectively.
One day, there was a big project for the office and that guy will get $200,000. But the boss gave this job to Dr. Money. He had $1,000,000 at that time.

Dr.Kill was too angry because the boss didn't give the job to him and Dr. Money had $200,000 more than him. He waited a moment and said,'' I will kill Dr. Money!'' Then, he thought about a big idea. He said,'' This idea is easy enough to kill Dr. Money, I can also take all his money.''

After that, Dr. Kill called Mrs. Money and said, '' I am Dr. Kill, the officer in the Bank of China. I know that you are rich, maybe I can sell a product which called insurance. It can be useful when you are in a hospital and you don't need to pay. It only needs you $300,000. It is very cheap. Also, there is a good stock to buy now. It increased 185% last year. Someone said it will increase 300% more. It only needs you $699,901. If you buy all two items, now needs you $999,901, next year it will become $2,000,000, .......''

''Okay, I buy, I give $999,901 to you. Bye!'' said Mrs. Money.

At that time, Mrs. Money and Dr.Money only had $99. But luckily, Dr. Money earned $10,000. (He didn't know what's happened) There were $10,099, can be used for three months.

Dr. Kill had $1,799,901 at that time. He didn’t work with Dr. Money anymore. He used 80% of the money to make his own laboratory and 15% of the money to buy ingredients for making toxic chemicals. After that, he only had $90,000. Three months later, Dr. Kill’s laboratory was established. At that time, Dr. Money knew what happened. He had no money and drank beer at the bar angrily. Then, Dr. Kill invited him to his home and had dinner to say ‘sorry’ to him. Dr. Kill put some toxic chemicals into Dr. Money’s glass. He drank it, and died. Mrs. Money knew this at last. Her husband died and she had no money. Dr. Kill said that if she worked with him and she will have money so she worked with him.

Four months later, Dr. Kill had used all his money. He decided to use the same way to kill Mrs. Money as Dr. Money. This time he took Mrs. Money to a restaurant but Mrs. Money didn’t want to drink. She just ate a plate of spaghetti. So Dr. Kill threw away the toxic chemicals and used some 'mouse chemicals' to put into Mrs. Money’s plate. Mrs. Money ate it, and died.

At the end, the police caught him because of killing Dr. Money and Mrs. Money.

He needed to stay in jail forever. He was lonely. He felt repent that he killed one another before.

Lunar New Year Homework

This is a story called November Rain.

Exposition

One day, at the rainbow bar, people at the bar were smoking, drinking and kissing including Axl and Stephanie. They both love each other. But suddenly, an unknown woman went inside the bar and hit Stephanie. Axl felt hurt because the unknown woman hit Stephanie.

Rising Action

Axl was angry that the unknown woman killed Stephanie. He wanted to kill that guy so he drove a car and falled to the cliff but she didn't die. Axl was too angry about this thing so he went into a gun shop to buy a gun. He decided to kill the unknown woman. He also bought a pair of gloves so that the Government couldn't check who is the killer.

Climax

Axl and Stephanie got married in a church but he forgot to bring the ring. He used Slash's ring! After that, they went outside to eat the wedding cake. Suddenly, it rained heavily. People went away and the cake was destoryed, the red wine was spilled. At that time, Axl saw the unknown woman who hit Stephanie at the bar. He wore the gloves to hold the gun and targeted the unknown woman but he was too sad because he killed Stephanie wrongly.

Falling Action

Stephanie was buried. The wedding party became a funeral service. Everyone was sad expect the unknown woman because he saw that he wanted to kill her at that time but unluckily he killed Stephanie. She was angry so she wanted to kill Axl.

Resolution

The unknown woman went to buy a gun too. She killed Axl but this time Slash saw that. Axl was dead. Slash went to the police station and told it to the police. Finally, the unknown woman went into the jail.

Jeremy's theme

I will write about revenge in the Jeremy letter. It is written by Jeremy's class teacher and read by Jeremy's parents. In this letter, I will talk to his parents about he got bullied in the class and one day, he killed all his classmates. I hope his parents can help him and teach him about this thing.

The big idea (theme) of the Ugly Ducklings

I think the theme of the Ugly Ducklings is to respect others because in this story, the another duck bullied a duck that is ugly. But I think ugly or beautiful should not be judge that he is good or bad guy.

We are now on Nathan Road.Nathan Road is the main road in Kowloon that through Tsim Sha Tsui to Mong Kok. It is lined with department store, hotels, restaurants . It starts on the southern part of Kowloon at its junction with Salisbury Road, a few metres north of Victoria Harbour, and ends at its intersection with Boundary Street in the north.

The first section of the road was completed in 1861. The road was originally named Robinson Road, after Sir Hercules Robinson, the 5th Governor of Hong Kong. To avoid confusion with the Robinson Road on Hong Kong Island, the name was changed to Nathan Road in 1909, after Sir Matthew Nathan, the 13th Governor who served between 1904 and 1907.
The section of the road from Gascoigne Road to Argyle Street was originally named Coronation Road, in honour of the coronation of King George V in 1911. The road was renamed as part of Nathan Road in 1926, after works joining the road and Nathan Road was completed. The section of Tai Po Road south of Boundary Street was also renamed as part of the road.

It is a important road. There are many cars pass this road. Many routes of transports is needed to pass Nathan Road every day. For examples, buses and taxies. Even, the MTR trains pass under this road each single day. How important is Nathan Road!
